I have always used Yamalube 4 20w40. But I found my manual after all these years and it say you can use any 20w40 or 10w30 in cooler weather as long as its API service SE, SF, type or equivalent (SF-SE, SF-SE-CC, SF-SE-SD, ect. I'm gonna change to the 10w30 for the winter, I may use regular engine oil instead of the $4.00 a quart Yamalube.

I got the YamaLube 4-Cycle Engine Oil 1st time around, for $4 a quart at the Dealer and $12.99 for a Yamaha Oil Filter for my Kodiak.

I did some research and found that you just really need to meet the API SF/SG/SH and Wet Clutch Protection type of oil. I found that AutoZone carries Valvoline 4 Stroke Motorcycle Oil SAE 10w40 and 20w40, High Temperature Performance Superior Wet Clutch Protection for $2.99. Found the cross reference to a few other oil filters and I like the STP Brand for my next oil change, it's only $5.99 at AutoZone and looks almost identical. The FRAM and a few other brands I looked at were not made as good as the STP and the Yamaha Filters.

Every buck saved makes it easier to change my oil more often.

I think the important thing is to insure the oil is for Wet Clutch Protection and cost effective enough to change your oil often.

Its much cheeper to change your oil and filter than to change your engine.

Whatever brand of oil you go with just make sure its 4cycle motorcycle oil. I used car oil in mine and it seem to do fine except for when it got hot on long runs the motor would smoke.
