what does this part in the motor do?!

ok when i got my bike back from the shop after the near 400 labor bill, it had this ticking noise many people on here have gave me suggestions, well i found waht it is. on the cam theres this little pin that moves in and out with this rod that comes out of the enad that lets the pin drop out with a spring on the bottom of it. what the HELL is that for? the guy put it in baclkwars so it was actually comming up at the WRONG tiem and hitting my rocker arm and it had JUST enough push that it would open my valve. Anyhow when i was racing it floated THAT valve. what do you think i should tell the shop? I paid them $45.00 an hour to work on my bike, i paid that price so it would ALL run right, so you think they are liable?
Thanks!

And this is reason #1 why I prefer to do my own work.
You are not alone! Many of us have experienced a little lapse in attention to detail from the dealer.
What quad was this on? Doesn't sound like the Raptor the way I am reading it I can't think of how it can be put together wrong on the Raptor. . .
Yes, they should fix it for free. This was clearly their mess up!
Not knowing the set-up, I would think this could be very dangerous - could potentially open the valve when the piston is up???

DuneMe, it was explained to me that on the wheel that the cam is attached to there are the spring thingys that with cintrifical force the spin the rod in the end of the cam 180 deg. and it allows that pin to drop down after it starts. (the pin is a decompresion pin) well the dumb *** put the part that turns 180 Deg. on so that when it hits the right centrifical force it dosen't drop free, it actually pushes it up! i never saw anywhere in the maual where it talked about this. so anyone else that has a rappy be careful to get that right... it does or did open my valve when it was running and when i hit HIGH rpm it broke the valve. sorry if my terms are not right as i am a lamen to this sort of stuff
