Rebuild vs. New??
#1
Guys theres lots of which quad is better posts on here, but I was curious what ya'lls opinions are on a quad once it gets up in the yrs. Do you rebuild it, or sell it and buy another? In my opinion theres two ways to look at it.
One- Rebuild. New top-end(piston,rings,wrist pin, all goodies needed), new bottom end bearing, new rod?(is it needed?), time/labor to split the crank and cases. Add up all the expenses and chalk it up to money saved that would've been shelled out for a new(er) quad.
or
Two- Sell. Sell it before you have to dive into the bottom end and split cases and cranks. Saving the money required to buy new crank bearings, bottom end rod bearings, cost of splitting cases, crank shafts etc.
Seems to me its kind of like robbing Peter to pay Paul. Do the costs just about balance out, or is it less expensive to do it one way or the other? The reason I'm asking this is I'm contemplating the benefits of rebuilding my rappy(02'gears and bottom end rebuild items while I'm in there), or just selling it before these items are required and chalking the cost up to the money I'd be saving if I had the rebuild done. Keep in mind I'd be (if at all possible) doing the work myself, so I wouldn't be paying someone labor. All thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

For me it would depend what type of ride it is. If the rest of the quad was perfect with all kinds of money spent on it i would rebuild. But if it was a pos id sell and buy a new/newer one

Myself I'm a repair type of guy...patch, straighten, weld, ty strap, ect. Alot of times getting by cheap as possible. But IMO if the machine is gonna have to have alot of other repairs other than the engine you may be better off trading it. Being a fairly new model you should get an excellent trade. A mechanic once told me the best deal in atvs was a new machine because the parts are so high. I came out well the last time I traded...my 87 BigBear that I gave $2500 for I got $2000 trade in for. I had kept it 6 years and it needed a lot of repairs when I let it go. Thats how I figured on it trade $ plus repair $ against price of the new machine. If I would have kept it I would have spent $700-$1000 on it and it wouldn't have increased the value that much.
I know its a tough choice but good luck which ever way you go.
