Default YFZ battery...grrr

Now that the days in Iowa are chilly, my battery is a pain in the ****. It always needs a quick 15min. on the charger before it will crank over a spark. I haven't even put much time on my YFZ, or left my lights on or anything. I guess what I'm thinking, is anyone else installing a kick start as an accessory starter? What does it cost for the kit...not including all the foot wells and crap yamaha adds to the one package? How hard does the quad kick over...start good on first start?

It's my only starting method.

I started mine last week (3) days in a row on the first kick. Sometimes it takes (2) or (3), but I can kick it several times and have it running in the same time it takes to fire via the electrical system.

Hold on and I'll go out and try it right now... yep, first kick again - seriously.

That's sweet man. So, did you get the gytr setup, or cobble in some yz parts? Just wondering what do do and what it will cost. Did you put in the bike one? Does it still kick forward, or did you modify your plastic so you can kick back?

Search eBay for the seller "magnoliayamaha", Bob has the kits for $240.00 !! Yes, you do have to trim the fender for boot clearance.

Good Luck,

I just read in Dirt Wheels that Yamaha has admitted a problem with YFZ batteries. Something about the battery not being able to take the output from the quad's charging system over time, cooks the battery a little bit every time you ride. I don't have one but found it interesting since a lot of you folks complain about the battery, might be worth checking with Yamaha.

Uhhh "cobble"? The YZ450F (dirtbike) parts fit perfectly.

Just wondering what do do and what it will cost.
+-$200.00

Did you put in the bike one?
Yes - see first response above.

Does it still kick forward, or did you modify your plastic so you can kick back?
"Still"? Never. The only way to kick them is back w/ modded plastics. There's actually a line molded into the plastic. Look under your right rear fender and you'll see what I'm talking about.

There are more folks doing this mod now w/ the GYT-R kit available, but I've had the YZ450F parts on since July/August - when mine was new.

Selector, meant no offense to the word "cobble", just deep woods talk Bart, don't matter to me what jerry rides, just make sure he keeps it in one piece...I always felt bad coming up to him in the woods while he was kicking and swearing at his lost tire or snapped axle pins!

Okay, so call me retarded, but what is the hot start button or lever for? What purpose does it hold and how does it work? Do you need it when you in stall the kickstart? Also, I've heard that if you take out the battery, you need to remove the fan b/c if the fan kicks in it can blow fuses...is there a way to hook up a regulator to keep the fan but lose the battery? I know it's possible on polaris scramblers when guys lose the battery, keep the fan, and just use pull start...does it work here to?

My buddy has had the battery problem since day one and replaced it within a few weeks with another brand and never had the problem since. I would suggest that before installing a kick starter. JMO
