Default Raptor Engine Build Advise

Fellow Raptor Guru's - I am in the process of modifying my '01 Raptor and need some advise on engine kits/packages and vendor choices. The 686 sounds good because my take on it is you don't have to perform bottom end work. Is this true? Who out there is the best for this build and how much HP can be made? My second choice is the 727 kit. Again who would you folks recommend?

You 686 runners - how does your 686 compare in a sand drag vs. other moded Raptors? Good trail ridin'?

How about you 727 folks - is this the ultimate build and seem to be the 4 stroke to beat without drugs?

Any advise is appreciated! Thanks!

Craycraft builds a superfast 730.....the trinity guys build a really mean 727(but not as quick as the 730), and if you can wait...sparks builds a good 690...but the 686's are just about equal to the 690.

Where are my sources for this....

Craycraft 730=4.281 in sand 300ft drag

Trinity 727's= couple of them run races around here....very quick...

Sparks 690 over 686 = video's from this forum.

But the 686 is no joke, and they have lot's of power. The mild 686's are ok, but ernie660r has a nice 686 with 39mm FCR's. Very quick and powerful quad.

if you are gunna straight drag race.........I think that the 727/730 (same thing different builder)is the only way to go........I really like my mild 686 but I do think that there is alot to be gained if I were willing to run race fuel.........

I just looked around breifly and couldn't find it, but there is a huge topic on here about it.

One of the members(basically his whole family has raptors) started the post and has the video's of his race. If you search and look around you should be able to find it....the topic is something like sparks 690 vs craycraft 686

I looked briefly, but couldn't find it.....but it's on here somewhere.

Its Raptor660fam. They've all got some nice rides.

Heres one

And heres another

I'm sure Raptorfam will talk to ya about his rides when he sees this. Good luck with your build.

SandDrag521, since you have an 01 Raptor, I'd recommend an 02 trans upgrade. And since the cases are gonna be split while doing that, I'd do a 727 with a connecting rod upgrade as well. The stock rod doesn't like high compression.

As for a builder, I'd research some builders in your area. Having your builder nearby is great for tech support, and possible engine problems.

No matter what kit you go with I would do the bottom end and put a stronger rod in.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. Has anyone ever heard of a stock rod letting go in a high compression 686 that was bored correctly and running high octane fuel? The only busted rods that I know are the stock bore jobs that weren't properly bored and/or 11:1 (static 12:1) that weren't running high octane fuel. Not running high enough octane will flat out destroy a rod and piston, the cylinder pressure spikes are double or triple normal cylinder pressure. Thanks!

SandDrag521 - If you want the best mix of performance, cost, turnaround time, and customer service, Craycraft is the only builder with high marks in all categories. Also, don't take Raptor660fam's videos as a direct comparison of Sparks and Craycraft engine performance, there are a few important differences in the way the quads are set up (pipes, gearing, air filters, jetting). Since you should get those 01 gears out anyhow, I see a 727 in your future:-)
