For Those Who Have Children Who Ride (Question)
#1
My brother just purchased an atv for his 6 year old son. He bought a 03’ Raptor 80.
Now the question part, Christmas day he gave the atv to his son. His overprotective wife saw a sticker on the quad that says “For 12 & Over”. Now she won’t let him ride it. My brother & I are experienced riders and saw he can operate the brakes and gas and his feet are firmly on the floor boards. All he will do is putter around a yard for awhile, till he gets comfortable.
My question is do you agree that he is too young for this atv? My brother has set the governor so low he can’t get out of 1st gear.
I myself see no reason why he should trade the atv for a 50cc. I think he would outgrow it too quickly.
What do you think?

NO he is not too young. Those labels are so they dont get sued, dont worry about them. I know a 4 year old that rides a little 40. 50's are very small and do about 12mph,plus u set the governor, so he will be fine.

If you have the throttle limit screwed in and are watching his every move when he is on the machine I think he will be ok.
I think he will outgrow ( the 50 ) too quickly. I have not seen the Raptor 50 in person, but I think it is almost the same machine as the raptor 80, same frame, only with smaller wheels, single speed and the smaller bore & stroke motor.
limiting power by setting the throttle limiter screw in I think you are achieving almost the same results.

I appoligize, I know I don't have children yet, but the only reason those age limits are on there is just because of the gov. sticking thier nose in where it does not belong. I agree that most kids in the age limit that the quad's stickers signify will either out grow it quickly, or will already be out grown for that size of atv. Especially with the throttle limiter on there, just let the kids ability be your judge as to whether or not they're ready for it. Take the kid out in flat fields at first to see how they handle it. Its not too much quad for a kid that age. At age 12 I had already out grown my LT80(and according to the cpsc), and I wasn't even "legally" supposed to be riding it yet. The limits are just obsurd. Let your child's ability be your judge.

These things are as safe as the amount of adult supervision provided. I just bought my 3 year old a LT 50 and think it will work out great. We all had a good laugh at the sticker on it with the "Under 6" and a circle around it with the line though it - yeah, right. My son doesn't even want the engine turned on yet, but that's ok because I planned on just pushing him around for awhile anyway until he can steer good enough. I had fun putting a knee on the seat and popping wheelies, though.

i bought my 6yr old girl a eton 90,my 13 yr old a 250 ltz,my 15yr old a 300EX,ALL GIRLS but i watch/ride with them and the main thing is they all got all the riding gear.they all have wrecked but no major injuries.its the parents that buy big atvs and let the kids ride unprotected and unsupervised that gives us the bad rap.let a few idiots ruin it for the rest of us

I think it is truly the parents decide if there child is mentally and phsyically ready to operate a vehicle safelty and that those warning are there for a "standard" reccomended age. SO like hondaBuster said, its the parents decision and remember there only guidelines and if you think the kid can handle it go ahead and let him rip around the yard and have fun.
