What performace mod should i do next?
#1
I have Pipe/header, proflow, K&N. What can i do next to get some more power out of my Raptor. I was thinking cam; seeing the difference a new cam makes in the YFZ 450 (at YFZ Central.com) but, does it make the same difference for the Raptor?
A friend told me if i'm going to get a new cam i have to get new valves springs and, might as well get a 11:1 piston too while i have it broken down that far.. He also said that none of these mods will work well w/o a port job and, valve job so he wouldn't bother?
That seems like a snow ball going down a hill!!! Would just a good port job do anything?
I am an all around rider, I ride Dunes, trails, and, love to do jumps... in case that matters.

I would save up and do it all at once.........but don't make the mistake I did........I would just totally bypass that stage one cam..........go ahead with the stage two.....11:1, valve springs, and porting........and you will have a runner

Scary is right! I've wasted a lot of money doing modifications a little at a time. Save up and go right to the 686 with 11:1 piston for pump gas or 12:1 piston for race gas, do the valve springs and run the stage 2 cams, get the GYTR heavy duty clutch kit, and have some port work done too. You'll have a runner and it will ge great for the trails as well. Price-wise you are probably pretty close to $2k for this set-up + labor if you don't do it yourself.

I didn't pay near that.......
piston and gaskets $200 (craycraft)
cam and springs $245 Bob Cobb (magnolia tractor)
cylinder bore $40
head port $350 I think (craycraft)
plus I paid my buddy (atv mechanic) $100 to help me do it........
total of $935
plus whatever you spendon a clutch......I am still running my stock clutch........

how hard is this to do my self? I'm an Average mechanic in scale. I'd love to save the $ for other things but, I hate to cost myself more by messing up.
Is there a place i could just send my motor and, they do it? OR< better yet a place near me in Illinois I could just drop off my Quad and, have them do it all? All the "Steallers" around here know less than 0.
Where is CrayCraft Located?
We have no performance shops that I know of and, definitly not a reputable one.
Any of you guys trust-worthy and, could do it? lol

i hear ya i made good friends with my local dealers mechanic and i told him if i pay him 100 bucks for him to fix it. he said sure. the reason why its so much at the dealer is because they get a quarter of the hourley pay so the mechanic gets next to nothing. thats why this guy did it for me!!!

if you have a shop manual, I think it would be very doable.

hell yes...do-it-yourself. i've never torn into a motorcycle engine until my raptor tranny went. this year i rebuilt my tranny (thanks to raptortranny.com and advice from Bob craycraft and parts from Magnolia tractor) last summer. while i was in there...i installed a JE 10/1 high compression piston and dropped in a stage 1 Hotcam. literally drop it in. with the stage one, you don't need a valve job.
the Raptortranny website is awesome. the gains are perfect for me. i just wanted a little more snap. my piped and jetted raptor was competitive enough. now it leeps off the jumps. even at half throttle. i'm sure the stage 2 kit rips!! but im in trails and track.
good luck...ive got some pics of the work i did. just click on the camera icon.

Where is CrayCraft? Anywhere near me?
Where would be the place to have the porting done? I know some of you are biased but, I hear Trinity does nice work as well as CrayCraft. But, I'm not in the market to get ripped just for the name!
