Bob is setting me up a 686 that I plan on getting within the next month. Hopefully I can get it ordered and the parts shipped to him within this month so I can get it back asap.

Purchase a 102mm piston, find a comptetent shop to properly bore your cylinder and check ring end gap. For a non mechanical person I'd just buy the 10.5:1 piston and a hotcams stage 1. You can do this install by following the service manual for top end disassembly without too much extra heart ache. After rejetting the carb to go with the increased displacement you should see a pretty good bang for the buck increase in power. You'll be in for about $400 for the piston, gaskets, cam and bore. This wont be a super powerful 686 but it will be best increase for least cash and work. Later if you can swing it you can have the head ported and new valve springs, more radical cam, higher comp piston, etc.

Mine's a stock 01 transmission and holding up with a 12:1 686 dynoed at 58RWHP and hopefully will continue holding until I can swing a 02 spec trans. Anyhow $400 is just the parts and you wrench it yourself but figuring the $50ish to have the cylinder bored by a shop. If you want a more potent hi comp 686 the $400 parts cost remains the same but add $160ish for valve springs and $400ish for porting. Your carbs will need attentention and I dont know what modding the stock carbs runs but my FCRs were almost $800. You can get by with stock carbs and huge jetting but you'll probably still run lean and lean is bad! Forgot to add, trail riding is seriously tiring with a built 686, I dont know if my riding style changed and got more wheelie happy or if it's just plain harder but I get severely worn out after a shorter time in the tight stuff. Must be that over active thumb throttle......

If I remember right Magnolia Yamaha sold the complete trans kit for $375ish. I planned to buy from them and have LRD install. I really dont want to tear into the bottom end. Good time to bore the cases for 727 and install a Carrillo rod. I plan to order the rod next week and the trans shortly thereafter.
