i was looking into buying a raptor now.i rode an 03 and man did that thing scream.it had a full yoshi system and was jetted.did well in the trails too.i was impressed.i dont want to spend over $3000 and i found a few 01 for under that.they looked very clean.did all of them have a tranny problem?are they as fast/powerful as the 02,03,04 raptors?what all changed on them?thanks

I had a 2001 raptor and never had any trouble with it.It had a full alba pipe K&n and jet kit and it could hang right with 02 and 03 raptors with the same mods. The rear shock on 02 and up is piggy back instead of remote I am not sure of any other changes though.I rode it in Florida in swampy sandy terrain,in Ohio and West Virginia in all types of conditions and my tranny never gave me any trouble at all and mine had a lot of hours on it.I heard of tranny problems but none of my friends had any trouble with their 01 raptors.

Let me give you some good advise....stay far away from an 01 Raptor unless the gear set has been upgraded too 02 specs. When the tranny goes, the possibility is there too lunch the entire engine....don't chance it. Welcome too the forums!

Some changes include:
1) Tranny (I busted both an 01 and 02 so ........?)
2) Choke cable - 01s allow water into the plunger/carb area and they can corrode badly - Fixed in 02.
3) Piggy back rear shock on 02+. 01s have a remote resivor.
4) Different looking rear linkage on 02+ - not sure how/why.
5) One way bearing same on 01 and 02+ (might be new for 04) but still ongoing potential problem.
That's all that comes to mind.......there might be more
