Will I like 14/40 on my Raptor???
#1
I am looking for more top speed on my Raptor and I'm considering going up a tooth on the front sprocket. Will I loose a lot of bottom end? Will my take-offs suffer?
My trails are mostly sand, some hills, no jumps. Many parts of the trails are low maintenance sand roads that are long and fast. To get to these trails involves riding for 20 minutes on public roads that are labelled "ATVs Must Stay On Pavement". You gotta love that!!!
My Raptor is jetted and the air box is opened up with holes. I have a slip-on MBRP muffler. I feel the power is quite nice.
Also, if I'm at 73mph with the stock sprockets, how much will I pick up with a 14/40 setup???
Thanks
Don

You can pull 73mph with stock gearing? On pavement or what?
I would go with the 14 is you really want to run WOT and need the speed. But for trails, it sucks, you need a 12 or a 42 rear.

I tried 14/40 once, I got real good top speed but the first three gears sucked trying to get out of the hole is a b!tch. By the time I would get going my buddies would be at the end all ready.

14/40 is crazy high gearing...the highest I've ever used was 14/42 and it was just to high for my engine to pull the lower gears how I wanted. Right now I'm at 14/44 which is still high but my engine pulls it very well, since your rappy is closer to stock you'll want lower gearing. I used to use 12/42 or 43 when my bike was more stock, it helped alot.

So going up 1 in the front is like going down 3 in that back, right? What if I went down 1 in the back to start with? Do they make a 39T sprocket?
Oh, the 73mph was on nice smooth asphalt.
