13/40 is that good enough gears?

I'm mostly drag race my quad up competition hill and Oldsmobile Hill at the California dunes. Now my bike has all the power in the world but i seem to be getting a little stuck. When i race up the hill i enter the whoops in second and ride second all the way to the top winding my motor out. Now if i try shifting into thrid i can still go up the hill just not nearly as fast as if i was winding out second gear. Now im a peak horse power 7k and peak torque at 6k. Im still running the stock sprockets, but im, pretty sure if i change my gears i will be able to change my shift pattern. Bottom line quad has lots of power but i don't want to bounce off of my rev limiter all the way up the hill, i want to be able to run third and still have lots of power, i want to go up the hill in mid-third gear, is this at all possible.

I liked 13/40 on those hills and Dumont,i liked the 14 better at Dumont then the 13...Im going to have a bit more power now so i need to figure out gearing,i want to start in 2nd and go up in third pinned..

He doesn't have the same power as some of you guys.
You need to try a 12 tooth counter sprocket. You ideally want to be in your powerband in 3rd gear for the best overall speed. One tooth in front = about 3 teeth in back.
What I mean by that is a 14/40 is about the same as a 13/37.
You can probably do second gear starts with the 12/40 too.

If you wanna do it right a tach is in order. Then, you can adjust gearing so you are at peak HP going up the hill. You are out of your power range bouncing off the rev limiter.

12/40 = 13/43
