To answer the topic and original question of the thread. . . stock vs. stock on a straight drag. . . Yes, the DS is faster.
The DS may be faster stock but, I will say the Raptor probably responds better (as compared to the DS) to a pipe / filter mod than the DS does.
If you ride desert / dunes the DS is better
If you ride mx / trails the Raptor is better
If you are a taller person the ergos of the DS are much more comfortable
If you ride tight areas the reverse feature of the Raptor may come in handy
The DS engine is a better engine. The tranny, connecting rod, etc. are strong enough to allow you to modify them to the hilt without replacing them with aftermarket parts. Jetting the DS is a 5 minute job. Jetting the Raptor is a 25 minute job.
The Raptor is a great choice for the ladies in the dunes (not saying it is a chick bike - just that the DS is too heavy if they get it stuck.) This is what my Wife rides. The Raptor has a weak tranny, connecting rod, starter one-way and the starter is in a crummy location - take a look at where the starter is on the DS and tell me that wouldn't help you MAYBE jet the Raptor without removing all the plastic.
Sure, everything I said can be disputed but, anyone that knows both of these and is honest will give you the same report.

The DS Rocks!
Bombardier hasnt really stood still with the DS, they have improved it alittle every year. They have gotten even more power out of it,and made it lighter, and changed the geometry of the suspension.and addressed all the little annoying things the 00' and 01 had (twitchy stearing, biggeroil filter, stronger shifting forks, better headlight,etc..)
The Rappy is a great quad also, but Yamaha has left alot of people ""dry" and with their 450 the Rappy has taken the back seat with Yamaha owners(and Yamaha for that matter).
Bigger.

Go with the DS baby, and never look back...
Just kiddin' everybody! Both are good, it just depends on what you plan to do with them and what size you are. Have fun!

"faster" is very subjective. Yes the DS is quicker and has a higher top speed in a straight run than a Raptor. Now in the real world where you ride will determine which is really faster. My 686 is faster than any DS I've run across but I'm sure there are a great many similarly modded DS's that will hand my **** to me in a heartbeat. They're both plenty fast and can be made considerably faster. Different approaches to the same issue. They're really very different machines and if you ride both you can decide for yourself which will suit you better and is faster in your particular circumstance. In the woods the Rappy will be faster because a DS will be stopped solidly in the trees, in the dunes the DS is faster simply because it outpowers a stock raptor.
