OK check the obvious: Is the drain plug in? Did you add enough oil for the filter also? Why was it only half full when you were done? Did you run the engine after changing the oil to verify no leaks? like at the filter and drain plug.

Sounds like the starter mounting is loose causing a poor ground or return path for the starters power. remember the frame of the starter is the negative side of the circuit. See if that helps.
