Default Rear Axle and Nuts

I stripped the threads on my stock 02 Raptor Axle when replacing the rear bearings. I ordered 02 replacement nuts (OEM), and a buddy of mine gave me his brand new stock axle from his 01 Raptor. I went to put them together last night and found the thread spacing was different on the 01. I guess they didn't leave the gap for the set screws in 01. Is it safe to turn the outter nut around backwards, and just not use the set screws?

There are a few things that the 01 had that was changed. The steering stem is lower or angled more to the gas tank. A freind of mine went to put on a new handle bar clamp (billet) and it wouldn't fit, but is the same one I have on my wife's 04.
