Default Looking at a used raptor and need some help

This is my first post, please take it easy. ) I've been out of the ATV scene for many years and need some help here. I'm a pretty big DIY type of guy when it comes to cars, trucks, and aircraft. (i.e. Heavy aircraft maintenance by trade.)

I'm looking at an 01 Raptor with big bore kit, .40 over, it also has a white brothers pipe, new clutches, and new brakes.

I've heard that the 01 had a few electrical and gear problems. What should I specifically look out for when looking this over and riding it? He's already told me that it needs one front wheel bearing.

How much do the weak parts for the trans usually run? Upgrades? Forget about labor costs from the dealer unless you need $500 worth of special tools.

The guy wants 3500 which is a steel, but it's been wrecked at one time. All new plastic. The price is kind of scaring me off. With a big bore kit and a history of that year and tranny problems, it's not a good combo for me to look at. That price is about what I have to spend ona quad. Can't afford another tranny this year or next.

wow if you cant afford anything for a year or so i wouldn't but it because if you blow the piston by any chance its 50- for the gaskett and around 130- for the piston!!!!! and maintenance is a lot too oil, time, radiator fluid (unless you want to re use it!) and if by any chance the tranny goes out its a lot of $$$$$$ around 500 parts not to mention maintenance!!! How often are you going to ride it? also what kind of rider are you? Is there any visible frame damage?

The raptor is in TN.

I can afford the maintenance, just don't want to sink $500 into the tranny.

I'm a decent rider. The Raptor is too much for right now, but I can contain myself. My first motorcycle was a 97 GSXR 1100 with a Weisco piston kit, Mikuni Flatsides, pingle valves, and webb cams. Bought it from a guy who ran it at 9.1 in the 1/4 with an air shifter and slick. I managed to keep from dumping the bike, killing myself, and became one heck of a rider in a couple of years. I saw the raptor as something like that.

yeah the trannies do blow alot in those unless u upgrade to atleast the newer ones but its goin to cost more than 500 for parts for a tranny and its just the time and knowing how to do it which is bad too. but if its ok the price is about reasonable because they did lose their value because of the tranny problems.
