2001 Raptor Tranny Question?
#1
I finally got me a raptor a few days ago and in love with it already. I'm not sure though what to do about the Tranny. I have heard of a lot of serious Problems happening. I need to know what it cost to fix this problem and if it is a problem with all 01's? What are the early signs of the problem? I have already noticed a clickin sound sometimes when it just quits on me. Anyone know anything about this? Also I was wondering what kind of Pipe i should put on the beast? sound is no issue for me. Any Information would be great, Thanks to all that respond.

The 01 tranny isnt destined to bomb. There is just a greater risk of the tranny going out. It ussually happens to people who ride pritty hard, though it isnt unheard of that they go when people baby them as well. My advice is ride it, don't worry about the tranny going at all. If you start to have a problem with 2nd gear, like it feels like the chain is skipping or something, stop immidiately and dont ride it anymore. It will only damage the internals more. My sisters exboyfriend borrowed my raptor for the weekend, and when i get it back and took it for a spin, it instantly felt wrong. He said it was having "some troubles" with second gear, but when i rode it, it felt awful. Long story short he didn't accept any blame for it, me and a friend rebuilt the entire engine, replaced all the barings(sp?) piston, bored and honed cylender, 02 tranny, new shift forks. Of corse while we were there we tossed in a cam high comp piston valve springs, and plenty of other goodies. The damage was not cheap though.
There have been alot of 01 trannies that are still going strong though. If it worries you replace with an 02, there is a website that will help made by one of the members, search for tranny stuff and you will find the link

You said if the chain is skipping...I have a 01 and i noticed my chain was starting to skip. This could be a sign? I think it might just be time for a new sproket.
