Possible Raptor Concerns
#1
I am seriously considering a Raptor, based on the limited details currently availble. I have read all of the magazine articles, and seen all of the pictures circulating the net. I read the dealers brochure and watched the dealers video. So far, it seems like excactly what I wanted in my "dream quad" minus 4wd, which I can probaly over-look, but the front wheels pulling mean I can "that much farther."
There were a few things that did make me question the Raptor a little bit.
1. Handlebars - look verty cheap and easy to bend - typical Japanese bars though I guess
2. Fender clearance - fronts look fine, but the rears look close. Would a 22" tire fit ok?
3. Carbs - If you changed anything performance wise, it seems as if it would be a night-mare to tune, regardless of what Yamaha claims.
4. Tires - Look weak, as far as puncture resistance and side-wall flex. Looks can be decieving though...
5. Chain - The DS650 uses a larger heavier-duty chain. I haven't seen which chain the Raptor uses yet.
6. Hillclimbing - Sure it has the power... But how light will that front end get, just when you don't want it too...
7. Availability! - I am hesitant to buy during the first production run. What if they do end up getting scarce, and/or the price goes considerably up?
Dealer now claimes it probaly won't be until December until they get any, and they won't even have one for the showroom. Ouch. I know I won't buy it before I ride it though, just hope that's an option.
One thing I also wonder about it is the width. If it handles as good as test riders claim at 43" wide, just imagine 46" or even 50" wide, as long as you didn't get too carried away with ride height. 50" is wide, but 46" is reasonable.
All of the strong points are always pointed out. But what about possible weak points? What types of problems are a POSSIBILITY for the first production run?
Most every machine from every manufacure has a few problems. If it's little stuff that's fine, but major shop time is another story.
This isn't meant to flame the Raptor or anything. I am just curious to other guys opinions, whether they are considering buying one or not. Educated questions, answers, guestimations, or what ever is fine. Just want to get some quality air-time going on in here.
