are you sure he wasn't telling you that you would have to have a pro-designs pro flow kit to install with your filter? If that is the case, you can order them with foam or K&N filters. The Pro flow kit is a bracket that bolts to the inside of the airbox and makes a flange for the filter to bolt on to. Some aftermarket boxes have nothing to hold the filter in so they have to have an aftermarket braket like the pro flow to mount any filter at all.

Posted Wrongfully:

A quick warning by the way, I have heard a few stories about UM boxes not holding up. In fact, here is one published review by Off-Road.com talking about the failure of a UM box on a 400ex.

Edit: Sorry, I originally published this post wrong, the UM received good reviews, it was another box which was complained about. My apologies.

thanks hound, but i dont understand why i would need both. i am assuming that if i get a UM airbox it would have a lip to mount the filter. but why would i be limited to a paper or foam? i found an airbox cfm that uses a 250r airfilter. check it. cfm airbox

ripit,

According to Moto-Man.com (a UM distributor), the UM airbox (heres a pic) does not come with a mount for the filter. Ergo, you will have to buy an aftermarket one like the pro flow kit. As you can see it this pic, they can be ordered with any kind of filter. I recommend ordering from Rocky Mountain ATV. They have very competitive pricing and good customer service.
