This is a good question. I can think of a few pros and cons for each. I am pulling this stuff off the top of my head so I may miss a few things.
Kodiak
=====
Pros:
- auto trans (always in the right gear)
- large cc engine 401cc in the 400 and 421cc in the 450
- diff lock (450 only)
- better clearance at the swing arm
Cons:
- auto trans may slip if water enters belt compartment
- no low range (400 only) for when the terrain gets very demanding
Big Bear
======
Pros:
- geared low for torque
Cons:
- need to shift up and down to keep power
- 386cc engine
- less ground clearance at the swing arm
Kodiak

The automatic with diff lock rule in the mud you are always in the proper gear all the time (no shifting) and you know that all 4-wheels will be turning in the mud with the diff-lock. Kodiak all the way.JMO

bubbabogger,
I am reading between the lines here and I get the impression that you are looking at used for some reason, is this so? If so, what are you looking at?(year)
If not and you are looking at new and you are looking at the 400 Kodiak or the 400 Big Bear, I would get the Big Bear do to the fact that the Kodiak 400 does not have low gearing or a locker and at least the Big Bear in first and second gear will pull you thru some thick goo. The down side is you have to shift with the Big Bear and anytime you have to shift you lose momentum so that would be a downside for some but not for others, it all depends if it fits your budget.
Big step up from the Bear Tracker. I bought a Timberwolf(4x4) for my wife and I have a Kodiak 450 and there is loads of differnce between the two. AlaskaBoy.

about a month ago, i was in the same boat. I was upgrading from a 1991 yamaha moto4(old t-wolf, beartracker), and i went with a bruin 4x4. It was cheeper, that the big bear and kodiak. It is faster than my dads big bear and a smother rider. It is much faster than my moto4, much better mudder, and i can go through anything my dads big bear can go through. the Bruin is a kadiak 400 with out all the bells and a 50cc smaller engine. I know it is not like this board to suggest something smaller that you are looking at, but take a good look at it.
