What's a Quad
 

I know I probably sound pretty stupid but, I was wondering just exactly what is a quad? (I only just bought my ATV about a 2 months ago so I'm pretty new to this and dont know much about them)

A quad is a sport oriented four wheeler. Like a Raptor, Banshee, YFZ450, 400ex, trx450r, Z400, and atv's like that.

I thought the name came out when atv's went from three to four wheels. So a four wheeled atv was also called a quad. Also everyone I know has always used the word quad to refer to any fourwheeler not just a sport quad. I have heard people up north refer to it as atving and down south as fourwheeling, I always thought fourwheeling could apply to trucks too.

I thought they called an ATV a quad because of the 4 tires.

bi- means 2 - as in bike, bicycle, bisexua?
tri- means 3 - as in trike, triple, trinity
quad means 4 - as in quadracer 250, quadsport 230, quadzilla (the 4th clone of Godzilla), quadruple, quad city DJs,

"Quad" is a slang term for a 4-wheeled ATV, whether it is a sport model or a utility model. The term's use varies regionally.

Here in Michigan my friends don't call it "riding" or "four wheeling" or "atving", they call it "quading". Like, "Hey, I'm going quading this weekend, want to come along?"

Personally, I still refer to my Raptor as a bike, even though a more proper terminology would be a quad, or money pit. I say "I am working on my bike this week, so maybe I will get to ride it one day this weekend before I have to work on it for another week."

I always catch myself refering to my rappy as a bike also, quad simply means 4 of whatever. Up here we all refer to it as quading even if it's a three wheeler.

yea most of the time we just say going riding but quad definatly just refers to the 4 wheels it can be any atv not just a sport quad. quad is just like ATV atving sport atv sport quad quading etc
