Default 01 Raptor starter problems....

i picked myself up a 01 raptor for 2600$ a few weeks ago, needed brake pads a clutch and front tires... well its been running fine untill today when i went to start it to move out of the way of my truck... put the key in hit the starter and sounded like the starter was just turning but not the motor, took out the starter and the starter gear was fine but the gear inside the motor turns, i was able to turn freely with my fingers, the bike ran fine last nite and had no problems and now this morning i got nothin. my situation now is i am stationed in san juan puerto rico in the military and i dont like dealing with the yamaha dealer here b/c i dont speak spanish. plus they dont like us military here. is there anything i can check b4 i take it to them. worst part is i was goin out riding on sunday and monday and its friday now.

Sounds like your one-way went the other way. You can still push start it. Keep a short rope tied to your bumper and your buddies can pull you.

Check the starter Clutch bearings in it might be gone... what just happened to mine, if it makes sort of high pitch spinning sound when u try to start it thats your problem... hefty 185$ fix oh btw, its located on the left side of the motor inbetween the stator and flywheel.

Classic symptoms of a 1 way failure. You will need a new 1 way and a flywheel puller. The 1 way is on the back of the flywheel. www.ripperracing.com has the L and A designs 1 way. Apparantly Yamaha realized someone (L and A designs) was making some cash instead of themselves on replacement 1 ways....so they supposedly redesigned the 04 1 way.
