Raptor wont start
#1
Hey guys I have a 2001 Raptor 660 that won't start. When you press the starter button the starter just spins but nothing happens. It makes a nice zzzziiiiinnnngggg sound but. What the hell is causing this problem and how much will it break the bank to fix? Thanx for all the help guys.

Well, sounds to me like the starter throw out bearing is not engaging. It will cost you $255 to get an L&A One Way replacement for the bearing, idler gear and gaskets to fix it, (and a gear puller if you dont have one). I got mine from Ripper Racing. Dont replace the throw out bearing with a stock piece of crap. Go to Raptortranny.com to get excellent directions for this fix. Good luck. Mine and a buddy of mine's throw out bearing failed in the same way.
Thanks again Yamaha for putting a **** design in the Raptor year after year.

Does the starter actually turn over? Does it sound like it might start, but then doesn't? I had this problem once before and it was because of the parking brake. I released it up at the handle bars, but it doesn't release all of the way. The cable on the back of your quad (above the swing arm) may be stretched, so it's not releasing all of the way. I don't quite understand why this affects wheather the quad starts or not, but it does. It would have costed me close to $300.00 to replace the parking brake, but I chose to block it off and do with out a parking brake. That only cost me about $20.00.

Sounds like your starter one way to me. I bought one of the L&A Design setups and it has been flawless ever since. I got mine from Ripper Racing also and I think that they have the best price out there. As for instructions on replacement, use RaptorTranny.com. Awesome site and wonderful instructions!! There's also a lot of additional stuff there that is handy.
