I've had Honda and Yamaha. I was always partial to Honda since they were the pioneers so to speak.
My last two purchases were Yamaha, a new Blaster in 91 and a 99 Wolv. Yamaha just had what I wanted. Looks, performance, accessories, and price. I wouldn't be afraid of either manufacturers.
Neither manufacturer ever made exactly what I wanted when it came to options such as disc brakes, manual clutch or whatever. I would have to admit it is a great marketing technique, thus your always willing to buy the newer model when the updated options are added. But don't be afraid of buying Honda or Yamaha, both very reputable, dependable and resellable. Do your homework and buy the machine for the type of riding you'll be doing.
Such as, don't buy a blaster to go hunting or to carry to full grown adults with gear. Common sense..
Good Luck,,
