I bought a 2001 Kodiak special edition in April and so far it has been a pretty good machine. I have just over 700 km's on it. I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything that I should look out for, or any god points on the bike.

After 450 hard miles, these are some general things I've found. It's an excellent quad, does good in mud (with new tires), hills (up and down) and is pretty fast for a utility. I filled the spark plug boot with dielectric grease because I had some minor sputtering in deep water. Since I did that, it doesn't sputter at all. Also after you wash it, check the "check valves" on the air intake for the auto tranny for water. I've noticed the upper one collects some water after washing but is usually dry after rides. It is easy to pop on and off. These valves catch any water so it won't reach the belt and I've had no slippage at all in water/mud to the seat.

I also have a 2001 Kodiak Special Edition, so far the only problem I have encountered was the back brakes wearing out after only 350 KM's. I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with valve clearances, I have not checked mine as of yet (only 850 KM's) on the machine so far, but I overheard a dealer make a comment about finding exhaust valves tight on the Kodiak's. Also what oil is everyone using in this machine? I really like this bike and I do think I will get another next year for "she" who controls everything!

I've used Yamalube so far but have wondered about using synthetics?

I was just wondering on my 2001 Kodiak I have what looks like 2 air intake pipes. These are a round black plastic pipe, ones comes from out of the front of the engine and up underneath the front rack, and the other comes out the back and up towards the rear rack. Are these air intakes for the belt???

Yelp, Those black tubes are the intake and exhaust for the belt housing. As far as the rear brake, I, too, have to change the pads. I have been told the mfg must have use a softer pad at assembly. I will be looking at two different type of pads when the dealer gets them in, so I can decide which way to go for a softer or semi-metallic type. As far as tires go I 'am looking at those Titan 589's on some gray billet rims. I have been on some challenging rides in the muck over in Hurley Wis area trails. Oh, by the I did recieved my speedo trip yesterday for my 2000 Koddiak. One othe problen I did notice is the Black plastic hood in front doesn't stay clip into those tiny little grooves on the gas tank cover.

Well, it seems like the Kodiak doesn't have TOO many problems, but they always seem to be about the same....My rear brake pads have worn out VERY quickly, and that little black plastic hood around the front of mine also comes loose. Other than that, awesome bike.
I was told by my dealer that there was a recall on some of the rear shocks due to leakage, put mine looks fine.

I saw an ad where EBC makes some severe duty brake pads which might just be the ticket. Has anyone tried them?
