Default checked timing

Hello I have 1997 wolverine its been running bad lately so a friend of mine told me to check timing. So I did with a timing light and it seemed to me that the line up mark on the crankcase cover was not lined up with the mark on the balancer it was to the left by about 1/8 of an inch is that normal or should they be perfectly lined up.
