RAPTOR ENGINE Concern/Question
#2
I had changed my oil and everything was all good, i took it out and rode for 3 hours...on my way home ( i was over 5 miles away )...While i was goin 80+ down the road my motor started to bogg down badly, i floored it and it just got worse. I thought i blew it up or lost the tranny or a gear. As i got off to look at it, there was OIL shot all over my engine and engine skidplate.. i pulled the dipstick and there was no oil, i knew wut happened and found that the Oil Drain Plug from the bottom of the oil tank was gone, it somehow vibrated out. The fan was not running on my quad, and the motor was not overly hot, i had to be towed back with my brother in laws quad...
Hoping nothing got burned up inside, nothing seems wrong and the motor will turn over as if nothing ever even happened...i am going this morning to get a new drainplug and oil...
Any suggestions or comments on what i can do to make sure nothing happened???

Sorry but thats about the best thing for you right now. If you had gotten home and then realised it was gone you might be ok. But since the motor started bogging down....well.... I'd be real worried to say the least.

sorry to hear about that. Similar thing happened to me out at dumont, was comming down comp hill and the plug came out (after 4 hours of riding) I did not tighten it very good so it worked its way out. Once oil started comming out i stopped it immediatly. I wouldnt worry about your lower end as much as I would worry about the top end. Get a new plug fill it up with oil, and see if she starts, and still runs. You may even want to open up small covers on your head and make sure there is still some oil in there. You might need to get a bore and a new piston if its bad.

And just so you don't feel so bad here is my quick story about the same plug.
Two weeks ago was the first time I had ridden in like 8 months. I went to the track, came home, and parked my bike in the shop. As I was loading it up earlier that day I noticed a small spot of oil on the floor but never really gave it any thought. I checked my oil at the track and it was just a little low, so I filled it. So I get home and the next day I notice a much larger spot of oil on the floor. I knew I had tightened that plug down real well, so I thought it was just that kine under there leaking (which I had off recently). So I tried to tighten that clamp...no dice. So I just assumed that my oil tank had a crack in it like most other peoples stock tanks. So yesterday I go back to the track and before I put oil in it my bro-in-law looked under there and said it was leaking from the plug. I said "well kinda, the tank is cracked and I guess its right there at the plug". He checked it for me...with his fingers...it was loose. I could have had a disaster if he wouldn't have checked it. Its not real likely I would have done severe damage only running 1/8 mile at a time, but I could have.
It happens to the best of us.
Good luck.

As earlier stated, bogging is bad. Your best bet is too down at least the top end and check for problems.

i lost mine during the first race of the season and after the oil drained out it got hot and just bogged down on a nice straight just like you described, that's why I have a 686 now. you need to pull of your rocker cover and check your cam and rocker arms to make sure they havent been scored due to over heating from no oil. That's the only thing that happened to mine, it toasted the valve cover and cam journals, it would still start and run strong, but if I had not checked it who knows when it would have grenaded on me, plus it started leaking oil around the sparkplug hole thats what made me take the cover off and discover there was a big problem. You sshould pull the top off just to make sure there was no damage!! Good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

OK finally got it all back together....i took it pretty much apart just as far as i could tell if anything internally was scratched or damaged just from wut i could see. The cam and rocker arms are fine...there was still oil in there, im confident that i turned my engine off early enough that it didnt use the oil that was in the crank, it flowed out the entire tank on top though. But when i pulled the drain plug to the crank, i got about 3/4 of a quart out...and there was oil up inside the head...nothing was discolored at all. I got it all together after about 3 1/2 hours with a buddy lookin it all over. I filled it up and made sure my drain plug was torqued to like 22lbs or wutever my clymer stated, and it started right up just fine after the fuel got recirculated from having it turned off. It ran just fine, and didnt knowtice any problems...it ran just as crazy fast as it was before, and was just as smooth and didnt hear any noises or anything of that sort... i will prolly change my oil again shortly just to make sure things are all good. I dont think ill ever know until i go to rebuild again or down the road if something happens.
Thanks for all of your suggestions and concerns, i really appreciate it guys.
I guess im really lucky this time.
