First Oil Change...Not Good!
#1
Decided to change the oil in both the 04' wolverines. It had been about a month and roughly 40 hours on each bike. When I pulled the plug on the first one, some type of grey rubber material was hanging out of the pan and bits and pieces of it was in the oil and plug. Then looked closer and could see small metal fragments. Pulled the oil filter and found some metal fragments. So I drained the oil in the other one and found exact same rubber material and some metal frags just not as much. Weird thing was, they never indicated there was a problem. Both run fine and sound good. Even when I started em up to warm up the oil to drain. I am assuming that this is not good. I mean shouldnt the oil be pretty clean for first change and that rubber material is puzzling. Just seems odd that I found it in both of them.

I would keep a sample of the oil and rubber that came out of each machine. Then contact the service department at your dealer and ask them about it. Some people have stated that they have had metal particles on the first oil change. The rubber would concern me. The only thing is that it happened to both of them. You might even want to call Yamaha so there is a record of it happening. Just in case there's a problem later.
Hopefully someone with a Wolverine will reply and say that it's normal.

You are going to find small metal fragments in the oil especially the first oil change. That is nothing to worry about. As far as the rubber peices, the only thing I can think of is that the dealer put some kind of silicon aroune the the drain plug or filter and it got sucked up in there. I would mention the rubber peices to the dealer and take them in to show them, but I think its nothing to worry about..

Next time, do your first oil change at 1-2 hours, then again at 10 hrs. Never wait 40 hrs! I don't care what your owners manual says. Yamaha is NOTORIOUS for not cleaning out their engines at the factory! Yamaha's DESPERATELY need an oil change, very early on.
I had that engine in a Warrior. There was a pile of metal shavings in the oil filter, EVERY TIME I CHANGED IT! Went on for years! There are posts about this in here, and others have had the same exact experience.

I agree...should of had at least 1 oil change by 10 hours.
you really think it is important to get it changed the first 2 hours also?!?!
IMHO you waited way too long to change your oil

Thanks for replying fellas. Ya I was just going by what the owners manual was stating. I would of changed earlier if I had known was good idea. We have only been riding 3 times. Once was a day trip, the other two times was camping for the weekend with two days of riding each trip. I thought I was changing early. Crapper...Well the metal specs makes me feel better. They were about the size of pepper flakes and it sounds like from you guys this is to be expected. As for the silicone, I was thinking the same thing, or maybe an overflow of silicone that squeezed out when they put the engine casing together...? But I will contact them and ya I saved everything. I strained the oil and put it all in a zip lock bag along with the silicone pieces. Im gonna clean the oil filter and fill em up with oil and run em then drain it again and see what it looks like. At least make sure I got all the silicone out.

lol, well thanks for making me feel better. Just finished putting one back together. Sounds good and runs good. Sent the wife to get 2 cases of oil....gonna stay on top of it. Anyone ever get that grey silicone in theirs. It was about the length of a spahgetti noodle but flat. Does seem like its squeeze out from the case or something else. Was just wondering where they might use silicone or liquid gasket within the engine. Thanks everyone for the info. ~Deimos~
