I put a 42 on the rear of my raptor. It is freekin awesome, really applies the engines power much better and i'm sure it will still go as fast as i would like, i only got it into 3rd or 4th gear at night testing it out and that was scary fast. It fit with the stock chain and all i had to do was put two washers in the rear of the skid pan, but i'm sure some skid's would clear.

try 12 on front its cheap , same ratio as a 42 rear and you dont worry about clearance from ground or to skid plate

I don't like having the front sprocket(each tooth) work so hard. With a larger rear the work is spread out over more teeth.

You'd have to go up another 1 or 2 teeth in the rear to make it equal to a 12. Also a 12 tooth countershaft makes a pretty sharp bend for the chain to clear which tends to wear things out faster.

RedneckMXrider: Thats some pretty low gearing man...you like it eh?

Actually, you to go up 3 teeth on the rear to be the same as going down 1 on the front (check the calculator link in this thread or hop over to Renthal and consult a chart). I've also been running a 12-tooth on my 01 Raptor for several years. The effect of running 1 tooth smaller on the front has been negligible for me (as in unnoticeable).

I've been running 12 42 for the last year. Right now I'm putting my rear end together, swingarm, shock, etc. Now I'm switching to 13 44. My skid plate will bolt up to the LSR swingarm, but I forgot about clearance issues. I'll have to check that out.

How many washers did you have to use to keep the skid away from the new larger rear sprocket? Are you running an aftermarket skid, and if so which one?
