Yes it is necessary to adjust the valves...unless you want to mess up the head/valves/have lack of power/hard starting and a noisy engine. I changed out my valves a couple of months ago and can take a pic of a valve so you can get an idea of what happens when you dont adjust them.

on old school engines with mechanical lifters you had to adjust the valves very often..but with hydraulic lifters u pretty much didnt have to adjust them, just once. Since the rocker arms on the raptor work right off the cam lobes, you can say it pretty much works like a 350 chevy with mechanical lifters, just adjust them and be glad you did the maintenance and ur quad will give you years of fun and stress relief

the valves wear easy, the intake are not hardend so they wear out and reduse your valve clearnce, thats why the intake valves alway get tighter, while exhaust valve are hardend and dont need to be adjusted as often as the intakes, but you should check them at the same time. If you dont adjust them they wont open and close fully or in time with the spark so you will loose power.
