2002 Grizzly stuck in low gear
#1
I have a 2002 Grizzly that seems to be stuck in Low. The shifter is working and the LED shows that it is in Hi, but it will only go about 20 MPH. Anyone ever come across this problem?

The tires are after market, I belive they are ITP. I don't remember what sizethey are, but I think they are stock size. I did follow the rod back and it is moving. It'll go into park and reverse fine.

Is your belt slipping? did you get it wet? how is the RPM when your going 20 mph? are you sure it's not in 4x4 diff lock? is the motor cutting out? will it climb hills fine?
If it is indeed stuck in low then I don't understand why its going to park and neutral ok but not high range, can you jiggle the shifter and very very slowly shift it from neutral to high? or does it go right past high and into low range. but check the belt first, it might be messed up. Perhaps your clutch is gummed up so it won't expand all the way? open the clutch cover and clean it all up, im willing to bet it's a belt/clutch problem and not a tranny problem. Im willing to bet you got mud and water in there and didn't clean it out. somewhere on here there is directions on how to clean that mess up in your belt system.
If the choke is slightly on and the RPM's of the engine are anything over it's idel speed then there is a lock preventing you from shifting from neutral to forward (so you don't rev the engine and suddenly put it in gear slamming the gearing) make sure this lock/safty device isn't jammed. but I would be it's a clutch/belt problem.

it is easy to clean that out. Pull off your belt cover and there is a plate where your primary clutch is. Remove it and if it is indeed caked with mud, use a 22mm deep well socket and impact wrench and remove the nut. Pull the cover off the primary and clean out where your weights ride. It is very easy to do my 7 y/o son does it for me now. I just snug up the bolts after he puts them in

Can you get it into low( and have the low light on)? There should be a very big difference when its in low vs high.
If its really in high, and only goes about 20, the belt is wet or the clutch is dirty. Youre gonna need to pop off the belt cover and check it out.
