Default YFZ450's are still kicking me

I am sure the rider has alot to do with it, the whoops at the base of the hill are killer at Greys Well.

But, the yfzs are pulling about three to 4 lengths on me up the hill.

If I stay in second, the rev limiter kicks in and it pops. If I hit third, I fall back.

I think I need to change my front sprocket back to stock and run second.

I should be able to beat those little chains saws with the mods I have, right?

I know the 450's are REALLY tough to beat, especially if they are modded. I agree with you about changing the front sprocket, go up a size on it and see if that gives you what you need to keep on truckin up the hill

Those 450's are impressive little machines. But, if I up my gearing, I think I can take 'em.

Also, my pipe blew out this weekend. There is hardly any packing left. The center tube has shifted down. So, the center tube is not lined up with the end cap hole. This could be what slowed me down, ay?

I hope?

You have a stage one hotcam and big gun exhaust. Your engine stops making power around 7500 rpm. You are ringing it out to 9k and cant figure out why you are losing?

Change your gearing, you should be beating piped and cam modded yfzs.

Maddog:

How did you know that I am not making power +7500 RPM? Do you have a Curve for a Big Gun with Hot Cam Stage 1 that I could see?

The rev limiter must kick in at 9K. But, it feels like it pulls all the way there. It's kind of a surprise when it hits.

Should I go back to 13/40? Or 13/42?

Take a look at your big gun curve and a hc stage 1 spec sheet. The hc flattens your powerband and gives you a strong pull throughout instead of a power hit. The big gun is like many other full systems in that it peaks just under 8k from what I have seen. Combined with a larger bore, higher compression piston which also increases torque you have peak power well under the limiter. It feels strong and pulls all the way because the modifications do not cause a dropoff in power like a pipe alone can, just a slow decrease.

Now typically if you have your gearing correct you would want to shift at or near your peak power, provided you could keep the rpms up and keep about 85% of your peak power when you shift. This means a shorter gear ratio for the raptor with a stage 1 cam. You probably want a 13/44 or maybe even lower gear ratio to take advantage of the power you have.

I would change sprocket and get haulers (21-22) and then you might keep up with us

I am bound and determined!!

That 450 is an awesome bike....I just don't like the ergo's, otherwise I just would have bought one.

You wont beat them...I have a 686 and a slightly modded YFZ myself and it consistantly beats my Rappy by at least a half length. That half length is VERY hard to close too, the YFZ just has the extra kick the Rappys dont. I thought my Rappy would be faster too especially since is tuned and broke in pretty damn good but NOPE! Good luck though, theres always slow YFZs and crappy racers out there you can spank up on!

I'd just bump the front sprocket up one and see how you like it....you have the power to pull it, and you'd be shifting less frequently. just my .02
