Default Grizzly 660 or Kodiak 450???

My dad is getting a new fourwheeler. His choices are either the 2005 Grizzly 660 or the 2005 Kodiak 450. He needs some help deciding what to get. Please let us know of the pros and cons of each vehicle. Also how are they own acceleration since me or him never drove a fully automativ atv. And if anyone knows the top speed or what they think the top speed of the quads would be let us know.

These two ASTV's are identical except for the CC's and corresponding size. I really liked both machines but did not need the power or want the extra size of the Grizzly. therefore I purchased the Kodiak. It is a little to soon to comment on long term performace but I am more than pleased with my purchase and would choose the Kodiak again.

get the grizzy... its a bit more expensive and bigger yea but its so nice to ride... the tranny on it is awesome and having a locking front diff is great in the nasty boggy stuff.
the top speed is about 55 or 60 depending on conditions and tire pressure, but it accelerates very well, I was riding my dads in 2wd mode on really grippy wet sand and i could lift up the front end like nothing... I only weigh 135 lbs. Id definately go with the griz if your lookin for an awesome machine. BTW it is not half bad at dune riding either... My dad rides it at Dumont dunes a lot and with him riding it it can still get to the top of comp without a lot of problem, only problem is it was a little slow, but you gotta give it credit for makin it to the top.

Before going with the Grizz I would want to know a few things......how big is he?? If he is a larger person then I would go with the Grizz just for comfort...what kind of riding???....the Kodiak with do about 55 flat out on smooth ground and the Grizz will do in the low 60's but as I have found you RARELY do these speeds. Most trail riding is about 18-22 mph. Both have low range and frt lockers. The Grizz does not have any more options than the Kodiak.
If just having more power is that important then get the Grizz. If handling and having a smaller machine with a MUCH lower center of gravity is imporatnt then get the Kodiak.
The other thing is the Kodiak has been rock solid reliable. The Grizz has ahd a few issues although they are supposed to be corrected.I will say one of our guys has an 02 that had the (heat kit) installed and it will still boil gas if ridden slow in the summer months.Hope this helps

Yeah get the kodiak it has been a rock solid machine, some of my friends have had issuses with there grizzlys. It is pretty fast and the grizzly gets only like 10 or 15mpg which is terrible and gets expensive to drive. I would go for the kodiak cause the kodiak can out run the grizzly on the trails any day if it was me i would just go for the kodiak it is an awsome machine.

wow, u havin heat problems wit ur grizzy?? ... my dads is an 04 and it dosent have any problems with heat but i think from 02 to 04 they have upped the size of the radiator and fan... my dad and i live in Las Vegas NV and we ride durin the summer at Glamis, Pismo, Coral pink, and in the desert here... havent ever had the over heat light come on and its never been very very hot, we even ride it at Dumont and make several passes up Comp hill and still no heat issues, and im sure that the 05 is even better about the cooling.

It's not an engine overheat issue it's the infamous gas boiling issue. We actually have 2 in our group that did this.My buddies still will....for example last summer (90's and humid) we were riding the quad...stopping to pick something up off the trail getting back on etc etc......not really stopping long enough to shut it off.Thats when it will still happen. The recall on these was the side covers, insulated fuel line yada yada yada. His was taken in for the recall and has all this done.He has not had any engine problems or anything like that although the guy with the 03 did have a rear c-v joint fail,,,,,I guess that was an issue on that year too.

There is at least one difference between the 2005 Grizzly and the 2005 Kodiak i know for sure, and it is that the kodiak DOES NOT have an electronic fuel gauge... it has information on the screen but nothing driving it... the Gizzly has the electronic fuel gauge. i am still trying to find out if i can get the one working on my kodiak.... if i need sensors ect.

a kodiak can't outrun a grizzly on trails. There is no way there is that much of a handling advantage to ever overrule the acceleration difference between the two.

Racer 154.... what kind of riding does your dad do? and how big he is? these should be the first questions answed before you go into talking about wheelies and 60MpH top speed, where does he ride? sand , tight trails, rocks ?

the kodiak same as the grizzly(same features) except it is a bit smaller with lower center gravity and a bit easier to manuver.

the statement : one out runs the other is invalid....
it all depends on the terrain. most of the places I ride the kodiak bare fits through and frequently has to back up in order to make a sharp turns. I am sure in the desert sand the grizz would out run the kodiak.
