two give aways here.
1) Black was only available on the SE (special edition model).
2) The SEs definitely have dual range tranny (hi & LO). It's obvious when you look at the stick shifter. The regular Kodiaks from the same year didn't have the dual range trannies (unless you could special order it, but i don't think so).

someone else told me they had dual range in the older Kodiaks, then dropped it to try and keep the price down in the '03 models.

as for liquid cooled, my '03 was liquid cooled. I thought they were for sure. my resevoir is located on the left side and I'm not sure where the rad is. maybe this came after '02???

looking at the owners manual it is liquid cooled, and has a tranny like the present kodiak.

in the year 2000, the kodiak 400 got the ultramatic tranny, with dual range (hi-lo-n-r-p). they also gained liquid cooling in 2000 (not absolutely sure about that, might be earlier). in 2003, when the 450 came out, the 400 lost the dual range tranny, but kept the liquid cooling

any kodiak, 2000 or older, has liquid cooling

sounds like the '03 400 is the crappiest model for features, considering there's no low range option on it, yet it's on the 00,01,02s. why would they do something so stupid like that? they have to produce yet another model of tranny, which probably cost them more in re-designing and manufacturing, than just leaving the lo range feature on there.

because it probaly wasnt that dificult to take the low option out, and it lowered the price, and gave one more reason for the 450 to be better, so the more expensive model would sell.
