I think that carb has a spring loaded tip for the float valve. You should take a look at that to be sure it's moving freely.
When I got my Warrior last month it was running pretty lousy from sitting with stale gas. I drained the gas and it still wasn't running well. When I pulled the carb off and checked it the tip was stuck on the valve. I sprayed it and got it moving again, put the carb back together and it fired up and has been running fine since. I did check the float height on it and it was right in the middle of the specs.
Like you said, it's a good thing to check with it running like you described.
I had a Timberwolf back in '96. With a set of Mud Machines on the rear it went about anywhere the 4x4's did, and had a lot better splash protection than the Wolverine!
Hope you get it figured out, sounds like you're on the right track.
