Yes I am a certified safety instructor and this is not my general practice on right and wrong however I am one of those wierd kind that makes mistakes?????Later

I congratulate and support you, atvinstructor, for admitting your "mistake" and responsibly editing your own post--a rare occurence on this Forum! My following comments are not meant to beat you up further; rather, to bring up some points that may help make this event a constructive "learning experience."

As a certified ATV Safety Institute instructor, you operate under a "higher care" than other ATV riders. If you've missed this point, I guarantee you the prosecutor and plaintiff's attorneys would seize upon it, had an accident resulted from your escapade.

"Do you mean to tell the court that you, a certified instructor from the ATV Safety Institute, were unaware before the accident that riding an unlicensed vehicle on public streets in excess of posted speed limits is an unsafe and dangerous practice?" Think about your response.

"The Raptor made me do it," may not effectively support your defense. (Apologies to "Laugh-In.")

If you teach your students that riding wheelies down public streets is an unsafe (not to say illegal and annoying) practice, this teaching point should remain valid, whether or not the rider owns a new Raptor.

The 12-year-old segment is not the only reader population that should be shielded from your self-congratulatory account of attracting the negative attention of your neighbors and the police with your ATV.

While you edited your post and admit you willingly did something you knew was wrong, a bigger picture exists.

The ATV industry pays lots of money to insure ATVing remains a safe, accepted, and legal activity; money including the fees you accept for ATV instruction. Ironically, think of the damage your one stunt visited upon the very objective the industry pays you to fulfill.

Judge you? I do not. Do what you must do. Only, "Be careful out there!"

Best wishes, and enjoy that new Raptor--safely and responsibly!

atvinstructor,

I am gratified to see that you realize the potential far-reaching negative effects of your initial post and have edited it accordingly.

As Tree Farmer so accurately notes, those taking responsibility for their actions on this forum are few and far between. I commend you for your effort to rectify the situation, and for approaching it as an adult.

Enjoy your Raptor, but watch that lower radiator hose. Where I ride the sticks would make short work of it. It is curiously exposed, is it not? Well, there are not many sticks laying about in the desert, but watch out for the stray sharp rock or cactus.

atvinstructor,
I see that you have edited out your post. As for the mistake, mistakes are common. What is rare is the ability to learn from them & admit to them.
Well done!

My apologies if anyone was offended, but you did come off just as sarcastic as me. If it were me, I would have explained to him the mistake, not gotten smart... about it. I have found that most people won't listen to you, whether you're wrong or right, when you take shots at them as you did. I can understand everyone's concern for such things. However, I won't tell you I haven't made the same mistake instructor did. When the cop came riding by, I stepped out and told him I was the one, and said it wouldn't happen again. I apologize for my overzelous desire to ride and hardly any time to do it, but it gets ahold of me sometimes. However, I have taken my cue and won't ride in the neighborhood again. I don't need jerky, condemning retorts to teach me.
That was how you came off to me, as if you've never made a mistake on your atv, and damn anyone who has. I believe anyone can look around at the political settings and see where this nation is going, and ATVs, in the end, will be a small part of it. So the fact that riding atvs on public land is becoming less and less frequent is almost a given in my opinion. I, and we, will not stop fighting against it the best we can, but in the end, it's not about the public anymore. I have no hard feeling for anyone. But I didn't feel like that's how "One Of Our Own" should have been treated. If in fact he is an instructor, he is simply an instructor that made a mistake like anyone else.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Later,

Jason

To err is human. To forgive, divine.
To avoid lambasting each other is pretty good too.

He may be an ATV instructor, so what? I'm sure he likes to have fun just like all the rest of us do! I know that Driver's ED instructors don't drive the way they teach people to.
I know that when I teach people how to ride, I don't do the same as I tell them. I tell them the right way to do it, I do it the fun way.

I dunno, Just seemed like he got jumped on pretty hard.

He should have had her cuff him to the wheelie bar and spank him for it. No really, he should be able to do what he pleases. He has to have some experience as to what not to do or he will not be able to teach that aspect of safety as well.
