Default Opinion sought - reasonable $ to thank a friend?

A friend of a friend lives in Alaska. The guy in Alaska drove to another guy's house 2 or 3 times picking up an engine and parts that I had bought. He then spent 10 hours building a crate and packing up the engine to ship to me.

What would you think would be a dollar amount (not including materials) a little on the generous side that I should send him to thank him for his time ????

Any suggestion?

On things like that I always try to personalize it as well, of course a card and thankful note along with the reward. Also I like to find a dinner place around that's good and include a dinner certificate.

$500 seems generous, not to many people making $50 an hour cash
