hey whats up guys my raptor starter just free wheels. so i got the starter cover off and the crank case cover off. i noticed the gear that is behind the flywheel just spins. i think that gear is called gear 3. i dont understand how it is freewheeling did something break . isnt it supposed to be hookeed to the one way.? i dont have a puller or 8mm bolts to pull my flywheel off at teh moment. im going to buy the la one way KIT but i am just maikng sure wiht you guys that - that is the problem.

ive been to that site. thank you. im asking why that gear is freewheeling. that site doesnt say anything about that gear. ....ok when you hit the starter the starter gear spins all the gears and turns the motor over... but right now i can freewheel all the gears. i am asking what is causing that gear to spin free wheel and not be locked into position or whatever. i am going to get the gear puller tommorw but i was just curious in the mean time.

either the springs in the one-way gear have let go,,,,,
or the bolts holding the one-way to the flywheel have sheared
when you shut off the engine or stall,,,,the engine compression kicks back on the one-way

i gear with teeth on it behind the flywheel and one way free wheels. i guess if i buy the kit it will hopefully fix everything. i just bought my 01 in sept but it was new. some guy bought it and never road it.

get the kit,,,yup
and be sure to get the grade 8 bolt upgrade on the flywheel puller (along with the grade 8 washer)
i also recommend an impact wrench
everything else is easy

you will understand when you get it off
the one-way rides on a flange that is part of that gear,,,,,,when you hit the starter,,,,it spins this gear and wedges against the oneway which is attached to the crank via the flywheel and it spins the motor
if it spins freely both ways,,,,,your one-way mechanism is toast,,,,,or the bolts that hold it to the flywheel have sheared
