Reliability of a Grizzley
#1
Guys: I rode my buddy's Grizz yesterday and was extremely impressed with the power and acceleration. I was almost shocked, compared to what I'm used to, which is a honda 450ES. I got a little taste of the fun that can be had on a Grizz and now I want one. What I really want to know is How reliable are they? Particularly the belt tranny. Although the IRS is comfortable I will be towing a lot of heavy weight regularily so it also concerns me. I'd appreciate all of the info I can get? My main use applications will still be farm work and chores, with some trail riding.

If you do a search, youll see very few grizz problems. If you go to other forums, its the same.
There were problems on older ones, heat soak, and axles, but iys pretty sorted out now. Thats the advantage of an older design, others get to abuse theirs and tell you how it holds up. Too bad the king quad guys didnt have someone else to hear from. But thats another topic.
Grizz has a low range, unlike your foreman, and when youre doing work with it, just use low. I believe the tougue weight is higher on the grizz, than the foreman, even with irs.
Most of the so called tranny problems are self inflicted, the tranny gets swamped( which is actually tough to do), and the owners dont clean it out. If you dont plan on any serious mud bogging...you shouldnt ever have a belt problem. The ultramatic tranny is by far more reliable that either the kawi or polaris, because the belt never goes slack and doesnt slip or wear.
I have a 450 foreman and a kodiak, and i ride the kodiak the most...thats how much I like it.

I have almost 1400 miles on mine. No problems yet. The Grizz is a little top heavy and the stock tires are junk. Other than that, its awesome. I have to admit though, that its hard to keep your thumb out of the throttle ( just to feel all that power ) and sometimes I scare myself. It can get away from you if you know what I mean. Especially on tight twisty trails.

I think the worst thing with the griz is the weak hitch. I took a piece of 2" I.D. and welded it to a 3" x1/4" flat bar and bolted it in the factory position then wraped the 3x 1/4" bar over the horizontal bar above hitch thencurved to top of 2" and I can carry way more weight than ever before

No, replacing a boot is pretty easy. With the stock clamps it is very quick. I can remove my axels in about 10 min. and have the boot off in less than 10 min. I pulled the axel and had a dealer show me how to change them last time. Next time I will do it myself entirely.

AHH, I am glad you don't have to buy a 300$ plus axle each time you rip a boot! I
I just got back from a good ride this weekend up in Canada, put on 200 miles on groomed snow packed trails and really broke the grizz in and I am very pleased with the machine. I need to do some work to go by a 700 prarie and the 750 Brute Force raced both and both beat me pretty good. I am going to do some stuff to it after I figure everything out that I need! How much did you gain with the pipe and jet kit? Do you think you could hang with or beat a Brute Force?
