Default Please help 04 griz Valves

Ok one more time, I set the valves off of the center mark on the flywheel to the line on the threaded hole ,is the center mark the right one? There was 3 marks right next to each other, I did not fire it up yet, wanted to make sure I was on the right mark. I looked all over for a clymer manual , the dealer told me they are not making them for the griz yet. Thanks

first off, be sure your on the intake stroke. its a easy thing, just watch the 3 intake valves, once they open and close, look for the mark. the mark is the single one, not the L looking one.
good luck

Fired it up seems okay, took it down the road sounds good, mich mine is an 04 I dont recall seeing an L, all I saw was ( l l l ) 3 lines , I did watch the valves and adjusted them when they closed and put it to the center line .I took that as TDC.I will find out how well I did Sat.

If I'm right, the first set of marks looks like |---| then | right after that. I believe its the last mark thats not connected in the middle (not |---|). Easiest way to figure out if you are on the compression stroke is to pull the spark plug out and put your finger down the hole. Then crank the flywheel around until you can feel air rushing out of the plug hole. That will be the compression stroke. Now just line it up and go from there.

After looking at the Service CD for an 02/03 Grizzly, it would appear to me that the correct alignment for top dead center would be in the center of the wide “H” marking. That is between the first and second vertical lines that are connected in the center with a horizontal center hash mark. As the flywheel is rotated counterclockwise the first set of lines will look like this,,,,,,,,l-----l,,,,,,, If you add the third line it will look like this,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,l-----l,,,,,,,,l
Center the TDC alignment between the first two marks. Look closely and you will see the marks as described.

That mark in the service manual isn't very clear. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what they were referencing with the illustration. Do you call the first connected mark an "H" or an "I". Or do you call the last single mark an "I". Hard to tell. I've adjusted mine for both the middle mark and the last mark, and have had no troubles with either. Last time, I used the very last mark, but I got that info from somebody on Highlifter's forum. A lot of Grizzlys on that site, and a lot of people to help out with questions. I guess somebody could always call a dealership and ask a mechanic.

I too had the same problem with the manual. I have adjusted the valves three times and have used the center mark on the first two adjustments. After reading this post I decided to take another look at my valve adjustment along with sheave maintenance as well. While looking directly at the printed directions and griping about the lack of clarity, one of my work mates pointed out that the alignment pictured appears to be in the center of the “H” marking. This is in the center of the first two marks as the flywheel is rotated counterclockwise. While looking for related posts on this website I found a post with the same placement for alignment for a Rappy 660 engine. I assume that while the engines are not identical they are from the same parents

The mark doesnt have to line up exactly. All that is important is the valve is seated, and the cam follower is on the base circle of the cam and not on a lobe. If the valve stem doesnt move, when you rotate the crank then its on the base circle and can be adjusted...if you see it raise and lower, then its on a lobe, and you dont adjust it there.
The reason they have it done on the mark, is because this is where both intake and exhaust are on the base circle, and simplifies things.
It isnt so much a timing issue...such as setting the ignition timing, where there is a specific place. The valve lash can be adjusted anywhere, the follower isnt on a lobe.
