I just picked up a yfz from the local dealer and have a couple questions. I already ordered a Jardine full exhaust and I need to know what intake I should get? I ride in very dusty areas but no water. Also I was wondering if anyone in VA could give me a base for jetting. Does the pipe come with jets or do I need to buy a jet kit?

 

You can either get the ESR airbox eliminator (if you don't ride in wet or muddy conditions), or get the Pro-Flow set up that still utilizes the stock airbox without the lid. Use the outerware if you get the K&N filter, or just stick with a foam filter if you aren't comfortable running a K&N in dusty conditions. I've heard pro's and cons of both.

I don't think the Jardine comes with jets, but I have never heard of whether it does or not.

Just get a
45 pilot
Put the stock needle on the 5th-6th clip position, or the YZ needle on the 4th clip
170-175 main
and adjust the fuel screw accordingly.

GYTR needle 2nd clip

this was tuned by a cert. yamaha mechanic and runs great but a lot of people think differently but hey even honda's recoomend 190 on their 450r so... i honestly feel its trial and error and where you live and what mods and brands you use...

 

I have the ESR intake and it works good, the only thing is that you can't ride in mud. But other than that, it works fine and it has a sweet sound to it, like if it's turbocharged!

 

One more question the guy at the dealership told me they don't even check the valves on the first service. Is this normal since the book says check on the first 20 hours. Thanks for the help

 

Mine didn't either.. they gave me a "free oil change" which cost about 25 bucks and if I wanted the valves adj or checked it was going to take 3 hours! I said just the oil and made some calls..everyone else can get it done in an hour.

 

Thet recommend checking the valves at 20 hours, but does everybody do this?? No.

I'd say check it within the first 30 to 50 hours at least to make sure things aren't moving around on you. These are pretty high strung motors, and you don't want to go too long without at least checking them.

 

What are the valves clearances for the intake and exhaust?

Blazing, I just picked up an 05 YFZ450 myself about 4 weeks ago and also live in Virginia.The elevation where I'm at (Marion) is a little over 2000 ft. So far I've added a DG Xcellerator Stage 1 slip-on, K&N filter w/Outerwear, removed airbox lid, Big Gun CDI, 13 tooth front sprocket and 39 tooth rear sprocket.I'm running a 168 main jet and the quad seems to like that.

The instructions that DG sent me with the slip-on suggested running an aftermarket air filter with the airbox lid off and running a 170 main jet at sea level.
