I think the Kodiak is stronger but the Big Bear is faster...I could be wrong.
Today I was looking at a 2000 kodiak ultramatic, man they are nice but the guy wanted $7300 for it, and bought it originally for $9000.

Rick, both are good machines. The big bear is probably faster just due to the fact it's a standard shift instead of an auto. Or I should say, the big bear will probably get you there quicker. Both machines probably top out around the same speed, somewhere around 55 mph. Main thing is, you need to figure out what kind of riding you are wanting to do, then you can determine if auto or standard would suit you better.

ATV-MAN, this is for you. I just have to know what city/state you live in? I just purchased a 2000 Kodiak 4wd just a few months ago and paid $6,000 for it. So, just curious where one must live at for the Kodiak to be $9,000

Sorry guys, but you are all wrong. The Kodiak will spank the Big Bear in all aspects. It is quicker from start to finish. I have a 00 Kodiak and my friend has 00 Big Bear, and I can beat him in any terrian. It has more power, its faster, you can choose between 2wd or 4wd, better turning radius, better breaking system, liquid cooling, and you are always in the right gear. If nobody wants to believe me, read the shootout between the Kodiak, Big Bear, 450 foreman, and Prairie. The Kodiak won in every catagory.

Hey, No fear....Don't forget, this is Canadian funds we're talking here...I paid $9300 on the road for mine, with many extras. Do you realize it's cheaper for you to buy an atv in Canada than it is in the U.S., changing US funds to Canadian funds.

If your going to do alot of deep water/mud running, the Big Bear is better. You have a water tight tranny, no belt slipping. You also don't have a radiator to get clogged with mud and overheat. If thats even a problem on the Kodiak, I hear other guys talking about clogging their radiator and over heating, but none of those were Kodiaks. Plus I'm sure the Big Bear weighs less. But either one is a great quad.

According to the Yamaha specs the Kodiak weight
is 545lbs and the Big Bear tips the scale at 556lbs, not to mention the Kodiak has 15 more cc's. Both are good machines, it just comes down to which suits your needs and funds best. I do feel the B Bear has the tighter turning radius and less to worry about in mud.I have however had my Kodiak in mud up to the fenders with out any belt slipage. Ride them both and choose the one you like best, then introduce someone new to the sport and have fun

I know it's been said but I felt the need to put my 2 cents in. An Ultramatic will blow the fenders off a 400 Big Bear in acceleration, and probably top end as well since it has a couple more horsepower. I've never had a problem with belt slip and I've been in lots of deep spots that I didn't get out of(and it wasn't because the belt ) The best thing you can do is go try them at the dealer, and don't be easy on em', the harder you drive the bigger the difference you'll see. And don't forget the push button 2/4WD on the kodiak, VERY nice.
