ive got my 02 raptor with a lot of hours on it but it still runs like a champ, but, my buddy has his 450r honda and he just went with a high compression setup 13:1and hrc kit for it. we were neck and neck until fifth gear then i would pull a little bit on him but i was geared 1 down inthe front and two up in the back . problem is now i think im gonna get smoked. sooo i was just thinking about getting my cylinder honed and put a 11:1 in mine.juct to freshen it up. but next year im saving for a 686 craycraft rebuildport job and the works, and a rebuild on my crank also rod etc . my problem is that its been 3 years of hard riding and im a little afraid about going high compression with the stock rod. what do you guys think?any suggestions?the craycraft would have been this year but my wife likes to spend my money as fast as i do . that isnt good

 

really three years isnt that old. like ive seen old warriors suzuki 230s's and stuff still running on the stock rod and bore since like 87. and they dont just fail. i would be leary of puting one on something that old but three years is still pretty new if you ask me. but i have always had older peices of crap bikes. talk to your dealer about it

If you've seen what happpens most of the time to a motor after a rod breaks you would think twice about putting a weak rod back in a motor. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

 

yeah i guess so. i stripped down my brothers 350 small block chevy engine out of his truck that had a rod failure and it wasent pretty. we found it was cheaper to buy a used engine then to rebuild the one he ruined

 

When I rebuild my motor, I'll replace the rod for sure, still very cheap insurance, the damage from rod failure is costly, especially if you're building up the motor.

 

I would tend to agree with UltimateAussie. Three years is really not that old, and for a modern quad especially. If you have taken care of the engine with freaquent oil changes, avoiding running the engine hard before its warmed up, etc. then I wouldn't be afraid to bump compression. But, then again, that is just one man's opinion.
