Can anyone tell me the procedure for changing the oil on the Raptor. Do you just drain the oil through the drain plug on the left hand side of the case(bottom), spin on a new filter, then top it up through the resovoir ?

Lucey,

I will be changing my oil for the first time this weekend. What I attend to do is read the owner's manual. I'm sure it has the procedure on how to change the oil/filter on the Raptor. I hope this helps.

My version is drain the oil out of the engine (bolt on lower left side), drain the oil out of the oil reservior (bolt underneath the reservior), change the filter. I then added a couple quarts of oil, warmed the engine up, shut it down for a couple minutes, and had to add about another half quart of oil. Make sure the washers are on the oil drain bolts before putting them back in the engine/reservior! Consult your owners manual for the exact procedure and torqueing specs.

Just did mine last night. Read the owner's manual as it has specific instructions on how to do it. The oil capacity is also listed in the manual. Mine took 1.6 quarts and I used Yamalube as the owner's manual recommends. Yamaha does not have the filter available yet, so I did not replace it.

1.6 quarts? Does'nt the owners manual say right around 1.97? (may be off a bit since I don't have my manual in front of me) quarts without changing the filter?

You're right Gary, it holds 2.0 without the filter change. I goofed because I only drained the crankcase and missed the step of removing the plug on the oil reservoir. I got most of the old oil out, but I will have to do it again as soon as a filter is available. I can still add another 4-5 ounces as the dipstick reads halfway between low and full, which is acceptable.

If you are worried about the filter stopping up with break-in contaminants and letting particles float around in that new 660cc engine, get a R1 filter and spin it on. It is just a little longer with 2 more "in-flow" holes than the Raptor filter. I had to use one with my oil change. Did you go with 10w-40 yamalube? Does your engine seem to run cooler now since changing oil?

The filters are $9.00 dollars at my dealer for the Raptor and my 900RR you guys are getting ripped. I guess it's good to know the parts manager. By the way they've had the filters for the Raptor in stock for almost two weeks now.

Make sure you start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes, check for leaks. Then re-check the oil level. It may drop a bit after the oil is cycled through the engine and oil filter.
