To change the oil or not?
#1
I currently own a 2000 Wolverine and am taking it to Colorado next weeked to ride some trails (9th year in a row riding out there).
Tonight I jetted, greased, cleaned the air filter, pluged the tire, and tried to change the oil...... The previous owner really tore up the oil drain plug. I was able to change the oil last year after hammering a 19mm on the plug. Needless to say, I fastened the 19mm on the plug, applied upward pressure on the ratchet, and turned. The plug rounded off (the ratchet stayed perpendicualr with the case). Any tips on getting it out?
Should I risk breaking something by changing my oil, or just leave it alone for the next few weeks and then go at it? I pulled the dipstick and the oil looked very clean. There are very few hours on the oil already in the case. Last year I changed it for a week long Colorado trip, then rode it 4 times throughout the winter/spring.
What would you do? Thanks.

hmmm ... what would i do ???
1. i would not attempt to change it till i get back.
2. i can try to change it by sucking as much oil out as i can from the filler hole using an automotive vacuum/brake bleeder pump.
3. i would try to remove the drain plug using the biggest vise grips i can get making sure i had already bought a new plug.
hope this helps ...

i would wait untill after the trip to make sure you arent stuck waiting on parts. i had the same problem on my blaster and was left waiting for a drain plug for a week. when you get back use a dremel to cut a slot just big enough for a BIG screwdriver to fit in, and you can figure out the rest i hope. drainplugs dont have to be super tight. just snug them up. they dont hold anything on the quad!!!

I am going to hold off on removing the plug for now.
Now I just need ideas on how to remove it.... The ones listed here are good. I thought about using an Angle grinder to make a long straight slot in the nut. This way I can use a screwdriver and unscrew. Although I question if I can apply enough torque to break it lose.

If you know any technicians see if they have a set of Easy Outs or something. Even Craftsman makes a set of special sockets for gripping rounded bolts. The Easy Outs are nice, just tip the quad on it's tail and have at it.

SS97, THANK YOU!!!!!!
I remember purchasing a "Damaged nut remover" set from sears a few years back. Also, with the easy out I was worried it would not "grab" because of the soft Aluminum.

I am anti-12point. Been there done that!
The 19mm was a 6point, used a couple of time, and showed no sign of wear-n-tear. It simply cut through the hex nut.
We leave this Saturday for 2weeks (one week Jeepin, one week ATVing). I will post my adventures and final results with the drain plug.
