Hmm...and your logic is? Seems perfectly practical to me and it's been done a few times by manufactures, just not directly with their dirtbike 250 engines. I bet people said the same thing about the YZF450 engine too, but a little different cam timing here, little mod here, little adjustment there, and BAM! Perfect for a quad. If they use the engine straight out of the 250f than it will most definitly be detuned and changed a bit. I don't think Yamaha will mate it with an auto clutch or auto tranny though like some other companies have.
