Default Kodiak final drive

I need some help with my 03 Kodiak 450. Recently I've noticed oil being blown out the final drive breather hose and dropping onto the exhaust manifold. In checking the final drive I had lost about 1/2 of a cup of oil. Is this normal or is something wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Its seems that it only happens during cold weather. I noticed this as soon as i got mine.
Check out this old thread

My fix was to get the expanding rubber bellows , that the suzukis and kawasakis use on their diferentials, and hook it up to the end of the hose. Now it doesnt drip at all, even in cold temps. The rubber bellows will expand to contain the heat and oil, and when it cools off, it goes back in the differential. Plus it totally seals things up, and now water and dust cant get in. I must have gone thru about 2 quarts, before i got tired of refiling it, and cleaning off the side of the motor, by the dipstick, which is where the excess seems to drip down to. . The bellows was about 12 bucks, kind of a ripoff, but i couldnt find anything cheaper.
I have an old picture of what i did.
I sent you a pm.

hondabuster;

Thanks for the info. It sounds like a good fix. It took me a few hours to clean the engine and frame of all the oil. (I hate a dirty engine.) It appears this was a problem the previous owner had too. Looking forward to the pic. I'll check with my local dealer for the part.

The best fix that doesnt cost you a dime is to measure out in oz the amount of gear oil your manual calls for and only put that amount in.
If you fill to the inspection hole its over full and will burp out oil like that.
My 2000 kody did it and a dealer told me about the measuring the oil 1st trick.
well let me tell you it works great......my 2000 kodiak had 7,500 miles on it when I traded it in on my grizz.....and it never burped any gear oil once I went to measuring it.
I've seen it happen with many others that I ride with and the measuring trick cured them all.
(It happens in hot or cold weather...most just work their quads alot harder in the cold, so thats why it shows up then........if you run it hard in sand in hot weather it will do it then too)

Thanks for the info. It gives me something to try before spending the cash. It makes good sense. Yamaha should have said that in their manauls. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I agree..the factory service manual i have says to fill to the brim of the hole. Id be leary of anyone who says less than that is ok...dealer or whoever.
