Default Play in steering?

What creates the play in the steering of a quad? Like when i turn the handlebars, it feels free then it grips and steers. You dont really notice the play while riding but you do when you are sitting still and steering. What causes this?

it could be a worn tie rod end, a loose tie rod end, maybe something loose in the spindle, or maybe the bar clamp isn't tight on the steering stem. I guess it could also be worn steering stem bearings and bushings. When everything is tight and in good shape you shouln't have any free play

check the castle nut at the bottom of the steering stem, if it is loose put some lock tight on it.
