How does the Raptor perform/start in cold weather?
#1
I haven't had a chance to ride mine, and my trailer is full of my Church's sound equipment, so I can't take it anywhere until Sunday afternoon. Can anyone tell me how the bike runs in the cold? It is around 32 degrees here steady.
Also, I haven't had any, but I'm just wondering if anyone is having cold start problems with thier new Raptor? I had a 2000 400EX and it was ULTRA cold blooded, I'm hoping that isn't the case with this new bike.
Any info would be appreciated, also, mine is bone stock, so I'd like any differences in cold starts/cold running between stock Raptors, and piped, re-jetted Raptors.
Thanks

Where I live, it's pretty cold. Around 30 to 40 in the mornings and nights. The Raptor, no problem, the 400ex, that's a different story. For some reason, the 400 has a hard time starting with or without the choke on. But, after it starts, it's no prob.

I was wondering the same thing I live near Syracuse. I'm in the Army stationed in Korea and I'm picking my Raptor up when I come home on leave in December. I also have a 2000 400ex and that thing did not like to start in the cold. Have fun in the snow, I know I will. Later

i had a 2000 400 ex last year and loved it. great trail ride but, definately cold blooded! i accepted that as just being the way it is w/
a burly 4-stroker. not the case w/ this raptor. ive got around 16 hrs. on er' now w/ quite a few 30 or so degree start ups. it'll fire w/ ease every time. it needs more time to fully warm than the honda did though. if you try and go to soon, it'll act up a little.
I idle mine at half choke for about 10 min. an im gone......

Last weekend I ran mine up in the mountains. It was around 15-25F, 3500-4000ft elevation, with about 6-18" of snow, depending on how high we were.
It definitely was NOT fond of starting, but I think a good part of that is the summer weight oil (20-40?). I think it would have been easier with the 10-30 oil as recommened in the owner's manual (page 10-2).
Give it full choke, maybe open the throttle a little, let it warm up for a while and everything will be fine.
