Default Wolverine Starter Clutch - why is '96 different for '01

I have a 1996 Wolverine and a 2001 Wolverine. The starter clutch went in the 2001 so I looked up the part number and it isn't the same part number for the starter clutch in the 1996. However, I took the starter clutch out of the 96 and put it in the 01 and it works fine.

Does anyone know why the part number would be different if they are interchangeable??

I notice a lot of people have had problems with the starter clutches (another thread a while ago), so is one of these clutches constructed differently even if they are interchangeable?

Also, both bike seem to "clunk" when the starter is turning over, more so than other makes of bikes. Has anyone else noticed this? Almost like it's kicking back when it doesn't start. If it starts right away you don't notice the clunking. Anyone know what the clunk is or what can be done about it??

When I shut my machine off, I get a slight clunk noise, then I can hear the starter spool down.
