yeah its like this in ga now, but back untill 2004 you could get an atv tag for all quads then but it was a big tag with Utitly use only on them and only allowed on DNR public dirt roads with the utitly tags in group's as long as one was a valid drivers lincensed adult was with the group the rest didn't need a driver's licence or even a tag to ride on the dirt roads to the atv trails, that all changed with the new law ! The only reason the law was passed the DNR said it was because ATV rider's were speeding on these dirt road's and causing near accident's when meeting car's and truck's in power slides around curves causing many complaint's by these near wreaks ! But i bought my first atv in 89' it was an 86'honda trx 350 but it was titled as a motorcycle ! I went to the whitfield county court house to by my tag expecting to get the big utility tag, and was surprized when the lady gave me the small regualr sized motorcycle tag with the regular letters and numbers, resident county sticker decal and 1990 experation date just like the tag on my street legal 1975 honda CB 450 had on it ! The lady even commented that it was a nice day to go riding motorcycles she said if her husband got of work early enough they were going to ride his harley to the smokies for a long weekend ! I thought about putting singnal lights on it and giving it a try, but my brother said they gave me the wrong tag by mistake, and i would get pulled over an get the book thrown at me ! So i chickened out, only to find out during the Blizzard of 93' when all state, county and city law enforsement all over the states the storm hit were giving free reign to anyone who owned atvs could ride on all public highways because they were helping the elderly homebound citizens get food, medical supplies, heating oil and saving lives with their 4 wheelers. Me and one of my best friend's who's elderly mother still lived just a few streets over from my home, were still riding around just for fun after car's were getting over the road's. And we had went across the main highway to fuel up our 4x4 then rode down the highway about a half a mile and turned off into a big carpet outlet parking lot we starting doing donut's an powersliding all over the lot till i got bored. And just as we started to cross the road that led to my house, a county sheriff's car came over the hill i was already in the middle of the road and kept going. i went over the bank and crossed an old railroad spurr that hadn't been used since the late 60's i looked back at my buddy who crossed without looking both way's right in first of the sheriffs car ! Luckly for him the deputy had chain's on his car and was able to stop in time, i started to take off but my buddy stopped to talk to the deputy so i just waited to see what the deputy was going to do ! He told my buddy to be more careful and that they were still letting 4 wheelers ride the road's as long as other motorist's didn't start calling in about the atv'er pulling out in front of car's causing accident's like my buddy had almost did , he looked over at me sitting there on mine and told buddy that i was legal because i had a tag and driver's lince ! I thought for a minute i didn't hear him right, but i looked at my rear rack and saw the motorcyle tag was visible all the number's you could see except there was the flap of my tarp just covering the last number of the experation date of my tag; all he saw was 199 the 0 was covered by the tarp flap so he didn't it was a 0 - instead of a-3 !!!! Lucky thing for me i didn't remove the tarp like i started to before we left my house that day ! Well i finally sold that old honda to my brother in sept,2005 on credit for 2500 after years of his begging to to sell it to him since i had a 93' suzuki 300 KQ i kept telling him i had to have two 4x4's so i would have one for somebody else to ride with me because it's not safe to ride alone. He would always say i'll ride with you anytime you want to go riding ! But my reply to that statement, you work full time mon - thru - friday and you wouldn't be willing to let someone else borrow it when i went riding on days when you were working ! And he'd say well no, if i'm buying it from you i wouldn't want somebody wreaking it then me having a wreaked honda i couldn't ride ! He pays 50.00 every week some times 100.00 a week. He down to 250.00 having me payed off. His wife told me when i get a new one to give them first chance ! I said ok if i ever get a new one i'll see you the KQ, anyway i still have the title on the honda it was in the original owners name when got the tag ! I thought when they sent to atlanta for the title transfer they would find out that it wasn't a street legal motorcycle and they would change it to allterain vehicle and cancell the tag and send me the atv utility tag, but they didn't. When i got the new title it stills say's 1986 Honda trx 350 motorcycle . So maybe if i did put all the signal light's mirrow's and street legal steel belted radials and street legal automotive wheels. I wouldn't be riding on the road's around the speed limit on the street's where i would ride are posted 25 - 35 mph.. My cousin lives in benton tenn. he said the law where he lives will pass by and wave. My brother has some friends that live in knxville Tenn and they ride over roads and even into town to pickup their mail at the post office. They people up there in those small towns, it's common place to see atvs farm tractors even the larger riding lawn mowers riding around town. If gas prices get much higher or doesn't come under 3.00 a gallon you may start seeing people riding anything that get's 15 - to - 20 mpg all over the country !

I dont know how it is were everyone lives but here in New York we have to register and insure our quads but cannot legally ride on any roads, and the cops around here are quick to write the tickets
